“October 23 is the anniversary day of the Hungarian uprising. It was the first successful revolution against a stalinist Regime. Only by means of a massive invasion on November 4. 1956 the Soviet Union was able to regain control of its ally. Thousands, also the socialist prime minister Imre Nagy, were executed. EST&OST has managed to find rare colour pictures of those dramatic days 50 years ago. Amateur photographer Jeno Kiss as a young family father refrained from taking part in the insurgency itself but whenever possible he snatched the left over colour film rolls of a friend who was an advertising professional. He walked the streets of the Josephtown district where just around the Kilian barracks and the Corvin square the most intense fighting took place. Luckily enough the films survived. Had the police found them it would have meant several years of inprisonment for Jeno Kiss.”
